Installed and whipped through the overhauled administration interface to the upcoming WordPress 2.5 release. Quite the number of changes. Newer WordPress bloggers may find it less confusing than before, but I’ve never been among those who have ever found the current administration interface confusing (oxymoronic quote “The WordPress navigation has confounded even sophisticated users.” from http://wordpress.org/development/2008/03/25-sneak-peek/). To me, being a sophisticated user means you’ve mastered whatever navigational difficulties you feel with WordPress. If you haven’t, I don’t think you can call yourself a sophisticated user. Overall, however, I think the improvements and navigational changes are enough to confound even long-time users … for a short time. Thanks to the ease of effort in upgrading from a previous WordPress install, I think veteran users, and I’m in that venerable category, will quickly adjust. Don’t get me wrong, I’m certainly not against improving the look, feel and navigation of WordPress’s administration interface, and I think the changes may be warranted if only for needing to keep the product current and fresh from ausability perspective. There are some intriguing new bells and whistles that may also lure others bloggers away from competing platforms such as Movable Type. And that’s my opinion as of March 18, 02008.
