HBC Archives and Quebec Seminary Collection added to UNESCO Memory of the World Register

Congratulations to the Hudson’s Bay Company Archives at the Provincial Archives of Manitoba and the Quebec Seminary Collection (Séminaire de Québec Archives) for their nomination and selection in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register. The Librarian and Archivist of Canada, Ian Wilson, announced this to a vigorous round of applause at a plenary session he introduced at the Association of Canadian Archivists Conference in Kingston, Ontario, I attended last week (June 21-23, 02007). Here’s how UNESCO describes these records in its media release:

“Hudson’s Bay Company Archival records, comprising the documents that contain the history of the company founded in 1670 and still existing today, which played a crucial role in Canada’s creation.

Quebec Seminary Collection, 1623-1800 – Founded in 1663, with the aim of training priests and evangelizing Native Americans of the Quebec diocese, which at the time covered all of North America, the seminary witnessed the birth of Quebec and Canada.”
