For those of you who missed The Ten Thousand Year Blog version that lived between June 02003 and September 02008 (just over five years) at http://www.davidmattison.ca/wordpress, I’ve resurrected it under that domain name and address: http://davidmattison.ca/wordpress. This is a semi-inactive version to which I’ll make changes from time to time. For the current version, continue [...]

Twitter dee, Twitter dum, a roundup of Twitter apps for Twitterholics

Twitter envy? Twitter anxious? Twitter angry? Twitter passionate? Twitter excites a lot of emotion, especially among software application developers and Web service providers who have jumped on board the Twitter bandwagon. I thought I should do a roundup of these applications and services, starting with this interesting utility: Tweet Tweet for WordPress plugin “that will [...]

Mozilla Firefox 3 and Hyperword addon

Stumbled across the new release of Mozilla Firefox, aka Firefox 3. Sad to see that the Firebug addon is not yet compatible. But I came across a different fascinating addon called Hyperword from a British company. This amazing addon lets you highlight a word or words on a Web page and then select from a [...]

The day I brought the Internet to its knees

Ok, it was really just my own domain. My former Web hosting provider gave me zero advance warning and suspended my account with two options due to server overload: upgrade to a dedicated server with them or find another hosting company. After quickly researching both options, I ended up cancelling and switching to a Virtual [...]

Net-Gold, sifting the Internet for current and reliable information nuggets

Net-Gold, hosted on Yahoo! Groups, was founded on May 19, 2004. Linda Bee and David P. Dillard co-own Net-Gold. David frequently posts Net-Gold content to the digital reference (DIG_REF) mailing list. His e-mail to DIG_REF, based on someone else’s contribution about the JISC Libraries of the Future, led to The Ten Thousand Year Blog being [...]

Got a Gravatar yet?

I’m thinking of getting me a Gravatar (Globally Recognized Avatar) at Gravatar.com. Now, who should I be? Dougall Campbell of Geek Ramblings created a great and easy WordPress plugin called Easy Gravatars that will “display gravatars for the people who comment on your posts. You do not need to modify any of your template files — [...]

Comment spam milestone (February 26, 02008): 501,041 plus burned off by Akismet plugin

Original post for 02007 04 13: The Akisment plugin I use with WordPress for this blog informed me this evening it has trapped and zapped over 251,000 comment spam since I installed it. That’s a lot of wasted bandwidth. Update for 02007 06 19: “Akismet has caught 260,600 spam for you since you first installed [...]

Blogs and sites about Freebase

As of October 15, 02007, here are some blogs and sites about Freebase, the Web-based database from Metaweb: Freebase Blog is the Metaweb blog about its Freebase application; its runs on WordPress Freebasing.org is a blog that runs on WordPress. This blog may be, at the moment, the only third-party blog devoted exclusively to Freebase. [...]

Number 48 on the inaugural Top 100 Prolific Bloggers by Bill Belew at The Biz of Knowledge

Somehow I made an inaugural list compiled by Bill Belew at The Biz of Knowledge of the Top 100 Prolific Bloggers; I’m number 48. His chief criteria was the quantity of posts, along with longevity and some sort of subjective assessment of contribution to the “knowledge base in the blogosphere.” This combination of criteria has [...]

In with AddThis.com plugin, out with Social Bookmarks plugin

While working on my Freebase.com article, I came across a WordPress plugin from AddThis.com for its social bookmarking service. OCLC is using it in conjunction with its WorldCat Beta public search service. Since AddThis doesn’t have the CPU overhead associated with the Social Bookmarks plugin — the graphic icons have to be loaded each time [...]

Claiming my content feeds for Bloglines

Attempting to claim my content feeds for Bloglines, at least the RSS 2 one. There’s some commented-out code in this post that’s part of the process. The other part is in my main template file. Sadly, the method they use does not appear to work with my WordPress template.

Another blogging hiatus as We Challenge You! goes live

I’m currently developing a new Web site called We Challenge You! (http://www.wechallengeu.com). The core component of the site is a links directory. I’m using eSyndicat Directory Pro for that part and and Website Baker, an open source application, for the content management system envelope. The mission of We Challenge You! is to link you to [...]

reCAPTCHA, an answer to comment spam and the proofing of OCRed digitized books?

In my never-ending quest to find the right combination of anti-comment spam tools, I came across a reference on Figoblog to a simply amazing collaborative computing tool called reCAPTCHA. This is no ordinary CAPTCHA program people. By using reCAPTCHA — and there is a WordPress plugin, along with several other plugins for other popular CMS [...]

New releases of WordPress

Quoting from the WordPress Developer blog, Matt says “Today [August 5, 02007] we have two security-related releases available for both users of our main 2.2 branch and the legacy 2.0 branch. As these releases include only security and minor bugfixes they should not cause any plugin or theme compatibility issues, so you have no good [...]

Two WordPress.com blogs at the Beinecke Library, Yale University

Yale University’s Beinecke Library has two blogs hosted at WordPress.com: African American Studies at Beinecke Library and Poetry at Beinecke Library. The Society of American Archivists Description Section’s newsletter piece about the blogs contains this statement about the positive benefits of blogs to cultural institutions: “Over the past several months, the success of the sites [...]

Fifth anniversary of my life as a blogger

The Ten Thousand Year Blog celebrated its fifth anniversary in July 2007. Originally created with the Radio UserLand application, an extremely powerful but desktop-limited blog authoring tool, the very first Ten Thousand Year Blog (July 2002-July 2003) still exists at http://radio.weblogs.com/0110793/ I used Radio UserLand for a year and just before the license expired, switched [...]

Another day, another social network or two joined – Library 2.0 and the Museum and Educational Social Network (MESN)

A work colleague sent me an e-mail announcement about the Ning-powered Museum and Educational Social Network (MESN). So I joined. These things are as bad as blogs and I imagine they must be addictive for some people. My MESN profile is at http://mesn.museumpods.com/profile/BCArchivist. I noticed that there are some other museum-oriented Ning-powered socionets, but who [...]

FeedBurner sounds destructive, how about FeedPolisher or FeedWaxer or FeedSmoother?

Update for 02007 07 21: Somehow I missed the news that Google purchased Feedburner for $100 million or so. I guess Google wasn’t bothered by the name. Original post, 02004 07 31: Visited Syndic8.com to check on my RSS feed and noticed a new column with some options to subscribe to the feed with various [...]

Signed up with new Web hosting provider

Original post, 02007 07 19: I signed up with a new Web hosting provider, Netfirms.com, which offers payment under the domain Netfirms.ca in Canadian dollars, so I’m hopeful that they will provide better service. The control panel is not as sophisticated as the CPanel one used by Bluehost and several other providers, but I made [...]

New look and new blog host for The Ten Thousand Year Blog

Update for 02007 07 20: This post no longer applies. I’ve since switched commercial Web hosting services to Netfirms.com. What an adventure this has been! Xannoblog will remain on WordPress.com, but I won’t be updating it. I’ve given up on maintaining The Ten Thousand Year Blog on Bluehost.com, so I’ve switched over to the free [...]

Upgraded to WordPress 2.2.1

If things look a little different and don’t behave as expected for a while, it’s because I finally managed to upgrade to WordPress 2.2.1. I’m still getting the CPU Quote Exceeded error message from my service provider (Bluehost). This appears to be a known issue with Bluehost going back at least three months or more [...]

Hosting provider and PHP problems with the Ten Thousand Year Blog

My WordPress-based Ten Thousand Year Blog and my TikiWiki site have been down more than up due to the “CPU Quota Exceeded” situation courtesy of my hosting provider. In checking the WordPress.org support forum, apparently this has been an issue with other WordPress users. Most of them simply switched providers. I’m looking at that as [...]
